Frequently Asked Enhanced Login Security Questions

Q: What is Enhanced Login Security ?
A: Enhanced Login Security uses Multifactor Authentication and is a new security feature added as part of our ongoing commitment to help protect you against identity theft and fraud.  Enhanced Login Security allows you to register computers you frequently use for Online Banking. If you login to our secure website using a non-registered computer you will be e-mailed a single session Passcode (valid for 60 minutes), which you will be required to enter before viewing your account information.

Q: How is Enhanced Login Security more secure?
A: Enhanced Login Security is more secure because it prevents automated attempts to access your information.

Q: How does Enhanced Login Security work?
A: Enhanced Login Security involves recognizing registered computers. If you enter your User ID and Password on a registered computer, you will be able to directly view your account information. If you enter your User ID and Password on a non-registered computer, Multifactor Authentication will require you to enter a single session Passcode, which will be sent to your registered e-mail address, before allowing access to your account information.

Q: Does Enhanced Login Security use cookies?
A: One of the ways we recognize you and your computer is by placing a cookie on your computer. The cookie contains a randomly generated, unique number used as an identifier. When you log-in again, your Web browser sends us this cookie that lets us know you are using a registered computer. The cookie does not contain any personal information.

Q: What is a cookie?
A: A cookie is a piece of securely coded information that Brookline Bank sends to your computer when you sign up for Online Banking. Cookies include a randomly generated, unique number used as a registration identifier. Every time you log-in from that same computer, your Web browser sends this cookie to us to let us know that you are using your computer.

Q: Does Enhanced Login Security Use Flash Objects?
A: Yes. If you have Macromedia® Flash® installed on your computer, we will use Macromedia Flash Objects to identify your computer in the event that we cannot identify
your cookies. By using Flash Objects as a backup method for recognizing you as a valid user, we ensure that your login experience is as quick and convenient as possible.

Q: What is a Flash Object?
A: Macromedia Flash Objects store data (in much the same way that cookies do) on your computer. If you have Macromedia Flash installed, Brookline Bank can use Flash Objects to recognize your computer in the event that you erase all your cookies.

Q: Has my Password changed?
A: No. Enhanced Login Security does not affect your Online Banking Password; it simply provides you with a temporary Passcode from time to time.

Q: Can I access Brookline Bank’s Online Banking system from multiple computers?
A: Yes. You can access Brookline Bank’s Online Banking system from any number of computers. If you login from a computer that you haven't registered, simply enter the onetime Passcode provided to you at your registered e-mail address.

Q: I share my computer with someone who also uses Brookline Bank’s Online Banking system. Can both of us still sign in from this computer?
A: Yes. You can use the same computer to login to your individual accounts safely; you won't see each other's information. There's no limit to how many people can login to Online Banking from the same computer. Just remember not to share your User IDs or Passwords.

Q: How do I enroll in Enhanced Login Security?
A: You can follow the steps outlined below to register your computer for Enhanced Login Security:

  • Click the User Options tab from the blue bar at the top of the Online Banking page
  • Click Enhanced Login Security
  • Select “Add extra security protection to this computer” (default selection)
  • Click Submit
  • Click OK when a pop-up window appears confirming your registration for Enhanced Login Security

This action not only enrolls you in Enhanced Login Security, it also establishes your current computer and browser as a registered computer. Going forward, you will be able to view your accounts by simply entering your User ID and Password. However, if you attempt to view your accounts on a non-registered computer you will receive a prompt to enter a Passcode in order to verify your identity.

Q: How do I view my accounts if I login from a non-registered computer?
A: Login using your User ID and Password. The computer will prompt a screen stating that the computer being used is not recognized and to please validate your identity. You will then be asked to answer the Challenge Questions that were set up when you enrolled your original computer. Enter the correct answers (they are not case sensitive) and click Continue. You will then be taken to Internet Banking.

Q: How do I avoid the please validate your identity section in the future when logging in using this computer?
A: If this computer is one that you use frequently add extra security to it. This can be done by selecting the "User Options" link in Internet Banking and selecting Enhanced Login Security.
